R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co will pay more than $95 million to tobacco company Altria Group Inc for infringing on three of Altria's patents for its vuse line of e-cigarettes.

Altria Group Inc is seeking $95 million in damages from rival company R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co, which is 5% of sales of the vuse line of products. They allege that R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co infringed Altria's patents related to e-cigarette devices that store and heat pods of liquid nicotine.

According to Altria's press release, R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co. will not only have to pay $95 million in damages that have already passed, but after this trial proceeding, R.J.R will have to pay even more until the patent expires in 2035.

 

A copy of the judgment was not immediately available. The principals of the two companies have very different approaches to the incident.

A spokesman for Winston-Salem, N.C.-based RJR said the company is disappointed with the verdict and will attempt an aggressive appeal in the future.
