Cross-border dialogue and in-depth expertise are defining features of the InterTabac, NUBIZ and InterSupply trade show trio, taking place in Dortmund from 15 to 17 September 2026. Alongside the presentation of products and services, the accompanying conference program provides a forum for expert analysis and professional exchange. The program is continuing to take shape, with newly confirmed sessions expanding the agenda to include current developments and practical insights.

Key topics include European regulation, tax developments, Track & Trace, as well as issues relating to science, consumer realities and innovation. This will provide manufacturers, retailers and suppliers with additional perspectives on matters that directly affect business models, product categories and supply chains.

Market access, EU regulation and a focus on Poland

One key area of focus is market access and regulatory requirements in international markets. In the deep-dive session “FDA Demystified: A Practical Path to the U.S. Market for Nicotine Products”, Roxana Weil, Chief Regulatory Science Officer, and Willie McKinney, CEO of McKinney Specialty Labs, will explain the requirements of the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) process and discuss common challenges in preparing submissions for the US market. The session will take place on 15 September from 1:10 to 2:10 p.m. in the London conference room at the North Entrance.

The program will also examine Poland’s perspective as one of Europe’s leading tobacco-growing countries. In two sessions, representatives of tobacco manufacturer Łukowa Tobacco will address the future of EU excise and agricultural tobacco policy, as well as expected developments concerning the Tobacco Excise Directive (TED) and the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). On the first day of the trade fair, Krzysztof Rutkowski, Partner at KDCP Law Firm and a member of the Polish Tobacco Association, will moderate the panel “Poland’s Perspective as a Tobacco-Growing Country in the EU in the Context of Future Excise and Agri Tobacco Regulations”. The session will take place from 12:00 to 12:50 p.m. on the Main Stage at the North Entrance. In the deep dive “Expected Developments Regarding the Two EU Directives Currently Under Discussion: the Tobacco Excise Directive (TED) and the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD)”, Rutkowski and a representative of the Polish government will analyze legal and tax developments relating to raw and dried tobacco in the EU. The session begins at 11:40 a.m. on 16 September in the London conference room.

Market cohesion, trade and supply chains

During the Main Stage panel “Where Does It All End Up? Can Europe Maintain a Coherent Tobacco & Nicotine Market?”, Tim Phillips, Managing Director at Tamarind Intelligence; Nathalie Darge, Secretary General of Tobacco Europe; Ciprian Boboi, Co-Founder of the Independent European Vape Alliance; and Leonhard Kipphan, Head of Track & Trace Sales at osapiens, will assess the impact of national regulatory variations on market cohesion and discuss how companies can prepare for an increasingly fragmented environment. The panel begins at 1:30 p.m. on 15 September.

Industry representatives will discuss the impact of European regulations on day-to-day retail operations in the session “TPD: What Are the Direct Consequences for Tobacco Retailers?”. Moderated by Manfredi Maria Marchese, European Affairs Advisor to the Federazione Italiana Tabaccai and the European Confederation of Tobacconists (C.E.D.T.), the session will address three key issues for retailers: display bans, flavor restrictions and nicotine pouch regulations. The session will take place on 16 September from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Bergen conference room.

Science, consumer realities and innovation

In the panel “The Future of Nicotine: Science, Perception and Consumer Reality”, Sarah Marking, Co-Founder of Sanova, will moderate a discussion on how regulatory frameworks, scientific evidence and consumer behavior are shaping the next generation of nicotine products worldwide. The all-female panel will feature Beth G. Oliva, Partner at Fox Rothschild; Dr Jessica Zdinak, owner of the Applied Research and Analysis Company (ARAC); Victoria Taverner, Scientist at Sanova; and Liz Frank, Head of Business Relations & Operations at Ki Bio Inc. The session will take place on 15 September from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m. on the Main Stage.

Under the title “Is Innovation a Panacea? How New Products and Technologies Are Shaping the Future of Tobacco & Nicotine”, Marc Reisner, Editor-in-Chief of Die TabakZeitung and Tobacco Journal International, will moderate a panel on the strategic role of innovation in an environment shaped by disruption and regulation. Participants will include Prof. Dr Douglas Ming Deng, Head of NGPs Studies at Yunnan University, and Reese Chen, Product Manager at REJO. The panel begins at 3:30 p.m. on 15 September on the Main Stage.

The partnership with media partner 2FIRSTS will also continue. The second edition of the industry dialogue “2FIRSTS Connect at InterTabac” will focus on developments in China’s tobacco and nicotine industry. Places are limited, so advance registration is required here. The session will take place on 16 September from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Bergen conference room.

Science | International Experts Propose a New Smoking Cessation Pathway, Citing Higher Quit Rates With E-Cigarettes Than Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Science | International Experts Propose a New Smoking Cessation Pathway, Citing Higher Quit Rates With E-Cigarettes Than Nicotine Replacement Therapy
A new expert paper in JAMA urges U.S. clinicians to include nicotine e-cigarettes in smoking-cessation discussions, citing higher quit rates than nicotine replacement therapy. It also stresses that products must deliver enough nicotine to replace cigarettes, dual use should be brief, and complete switching is the goal. 2Firsts argues the recommendations matter beyond clinics: public-health professionals should reassess relative risk, regulators should preserve sufficient product appeal for adult smokers, and manufacturers should focus on helping users quit cigarettes more sustainably.

Hunan China Tobacco Industry files heated tobacco device patent featuring adult-user identification through pressure sensing
China-based Hunan China Tobacco Industry Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Baisha Technology Co., Ltd. have filed a patent application covering an adult-user identification mechanism for heated tobacco devices. The patent proposes using flexible pressure sensors installed in the device grip area to collect pressure distribution patterns generated when users hold the device. The system evaluates factors including effective contact area, grip shape and contact duration, and combines roller movement detection to determine whether unlocking conditions are met. The filing reflects exploration of device-level user recognition and smarter interaction technologies for heated tobacco products (HTPs).
