Spain’s 2025 Survey on Drug Use in Secondary Education (ESTUDES), presented by the Ministry of Health, reports historic lows in alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consumption among students aged 14 to 18. The survey shows past-30-day drinking fell from 56.6% in 2023 to 51% in 2025, tobacco use from 21.0% to 15.5%, and cannabis use from 15.5% to 11.6%.

A cross-sectional analysis based on the US NHANES 2021–2023 cycle, including 6,262 participants aged over 12, found that compared with people who neither smoke nor vape, those who smoke and/or use e-cigarettes had a higher prevalence of elevated blood pressure and hypertension. After full adjustment, smoking/vaping was associated with elevated blood pressure (aOR 1.34) and hypertension (aOR 1.46), and with a 1.05 mmHg higher diastolic blood pressure.

Canadians traveling to Mexico should avoid packing e-cigarettes or vaping devices, citing Canada’s travel advisory warning that tourists have been banned from bringing such items into Mexico since 2025. The advisory says customs officials could confiscate the items upon arrival and travelers could be fined or detained.

The report says an international operation across EU countries aimed at detecting illicit substances in e-cigarettes also took place in South Cyprus, where multiple e-liquid items and products containing cannabis and THC were seized. It states the operation, titled “eVAPER8,” was conducted by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) in November and December to identify e-cigarette liquids that may contain synthetic drugs.

Vladislav Davankov, deputy speaker of Russia’s State Duma, urged a nationwide ban on vapes, arguing it would help prevent drugs being sold under the cover of vaping products, including near schools. The remarks come as Russia prepares to enforce a separate ban on vape sales at public transport stops starting Sept. 1, 2026.

The Netherlands is planning to raise the legal age for buying nicotine-containing products from 18 to 21, a change that would also cover vapes. The move, embedded in the governing coalition’s latest agreement, aligns with a wider European trend toward tighter youth nicotine controls, though industry groups have criticised the proposal and warned it could fuel illicit trade.

NSW Health has shut down five Inner West Sydney stores for 90 days after a major seizure of illicit cigarettes and illegal vapes, with two additional premises in Northern NSW also served closure notices. The action forms part of a broader crackdown that has seen 66 stores closed since new laws took effect in late 2025, with NSW Health warning further enforcement — including prosecution — may follow.
