Flavored Vaping Ban Bill in Maine Gains Support

A proposal to ban all flavored vaping products in the U.S. state of Maine is gaining support from key lawmakers on both sides. The measure would ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, other than tobacco, in Maine and other tobacco products. It also includes a menthol flavor.

According to the Union Leader, the legislation, sponsored by state Sen. Jill Duson, received approval from House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross and Senate President Troy Jackson. Committee meetings and public hearings are scheduled to discuss the proposal in the coming weeks.

Pros and Cons

Supporters of the bill say that although it is illegal for anyone under 21 to buy vaping products, the flavors added to products will appeal to minors and get them addicted to nicotine.

Opponents say it will only drive people out of the state to buy flavored tobacco, which they argue should be available to adults who vape to quit smoking.

Five Cities in Maine Ban Flavored Tobacco

Earlier this month, Bar Harbor became the fifth town in the United States to ban flavored tobacco products. Portland, South Portland, Brunswick, and Bangor also voted for a similar ban.
