Deepak Mishra stated, "It is a cruel reality that the majority of PMI's earnings come from traditional tobacco, and as the industry consumes less and less, this will become an important factor for PMI to transition to a smoke-free environment."

Deepak Mishra articulated four to five key points for PMI smoke-free transition, including the industry must be self-regulatory, the market must provide sufficient incentive for more traditional tobacco users to switch to e-cigarettes (along with nicotine harm reduction), and product innovation must reduce combustible cigarette products as much as possible.

Innovation is the most significant factor in achieving this objective. To this aim, Deepak Mishra drew a parallel between the tobacco industry and the automotive industry, stating, "Both the automotive sector and the tobacco industry can make progress in decreasing emissions by 2022." In the future PMI will become a technology firm similar to Tesla, rather than a traditional cigarette corporation. Meanwhile, PMI will collaborate with additional physicians to perform research on nicotine harm reduction in the future.

FDA has not explained the delay, and no public evidence links it directly to the leadership change. The timing is notable given CTP’s usual 24-hour distribution practice.
