American Lung Association Provides Free Backpacks with Learning Supplies
WCIV-ABC News reports on an event at James Simons Montessori School providing free backpacks with school supplies and anti-e-cigarette resources.

ABC News reported on August 4th: Charleston, South Carolina (WCIV) - Local students and families received over 500 free backpacks filled with school supplies and resources on quitting e-cigarettes at the "Bright Future" event hosted by the American Lung Association at James Simons Montessori School.

We have developed the 'Bright Future Backpack' project to meet the two main needs of our community families: addressing the rising costs of back-to-school supplies and protecting children from the harm of e-cigarettes," said Margaret Ann Youngs, development director of the South Carolina Lung Association, in a statement. "Teen vaping has become an epidemic driven by flavors like cotton candy, peer pressure, anxiety, and curiosity, as well as potentially influenced by the use of e-cigarettes by those around them. Studies show that teenagers who use e-cigarettes are more likely to try traditional cigarettes and are more likely to become addicted to nicotine.

According to the organization's research, over 13,000 children in South Carolina have been diagnosed with asthma, which is a major reason for absenteeism. In order to assist in educating and empowering families, healthcare professionals are providing resources on lung health and asthma.

By taking this measure, we are providing children and their families with tools to help them prevent smoking, so they can maintain healthy lungs," added Yang Si.

The "Bright Future Backpack" was developed and launched in Charleston in 2023. The program was created with the aim of educating students and families comprehensively about the importance of lung health, particularly the dangers associated with e-cigarettes among teenagers, while also addressing financial barriers related to the rising cost of back-to-school supplies. Last year, the Lung Association and its partners distributed 250 backpacks.
