Chinese Citizen Arrested for Smuggling Untaxed Cigarettes in Singapore
A Chinese man was arrested by Singapore customs for smuggling 1356 boxes and 3190 packs of untaxed cigarettes.

According to a press conference held by Singapore Customs on January 4th, a 32-year-old Chinese citizen was arrested on December 28th, 2023. He was found in the cargo compartment of a truck located in the Geylang area with 1,356 cartons and 3,190 packs of untaxed cigarettes. The total amount of tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST) involved in this case is approximately SGD 179,292.

 

The suspect in the crime was arrested by Singapore Customs in an operation at the parking lot of Yio Chu Kang Road. Police investigations revealed that the suspect was hired by an unknown person on a social media platform to collect and transport untaxed cigarettes. The man, who worked as a delivery driver for a food company, used the company vehicle for the transport before his arrest.

 

Currently, court proceedings are underway for the criminal suspect. According to the provisions in the Customs Law and the GST Law, the purchase, sale, transport, delivery, storage, possession, or trading of untaxed goods is considered a crime. Vehicles used in such crimes may be seized. Further updates on any specific circumstances mentioned above will be provided promptly.
