Debate over Anti-Smoking and E-Cigarette Laws in Nashville Bars
Nashville's smoking ban for bars and clubs is causing controversy among owners, some fearing bankruptcy, while others support public health.

Nashville, Tennessee (WZTV) - A law banning smoking and vaping is sparking debate among bar and club owners in Nashville.

Although some council members have argued that banning indoor smoking would protect workers and musicians, some bar owners aged 21 and above have expressed concerns that it would drive them out of business.

Santa Claus' Bar is the theme of Nashville. It is a dive bar with double width and is promoted as a smoking bar. The owner, Denzel Irwin, lit up Santa Claus before the interview started.

I won't quit smoking," said Owen. "I've been smoking since I was nine years old. I've been smoking for 63 years, so I'm not ready to quit yet.

Owen stated that if Metro prohibits smoking in bars altogether, it would harm his business.

I will lose half of my customers. Half of my business. Many people here smoke, the elder customers come in, listen to their karaoke, and then have a cigarette. I think they should be able to do that," added Owen.

Very few places in Nashville still allow indoor smoking," said council member Shawn Park.

However, some argue that the ban must be comprehensive. "This is to protect hotel staff and musicians who create economic impact for our city," said council member Jeff Syracuse.

Member of Parliament Freddie O'Connell calls for a postponement.

The journalist asked, "Some council members do not want it to be delayed. They wanted to hold the vote last night. They say this is because they are concerned about the health of Nashville residents. What are your thoughts?

O'Connell stated, "Given that we passed the bill either last night or within two weeks, I am somewhat surprised at this reasoning concerning the bill's effective date in March.

As currently written, this regulation broadly prohibits smoking and vaping of electronic products in places where individuals are 21 years or older.

In German town, there is a cannabis bar named Buds & Brews. They are concerned that this will shut down some of their business.

Buds & Brews offers sauces, drinks, and pods that can be used to consume cannabis.

Everyone comes here because it's what they want - the atmosphere they desire. So if they shut it down, it would cut off a significant source of revenue for our business," says Michael Solomon, owner of Buds & Brews.

Representative O'Connell told FOX 17 News that he intends to propose an amendment that could exempt electronic cigarettes and protect businesses like Buds & Brews.

U.S. Senator Durbin Criticizes FDA’s First Flavored Vape Authorization, Says Trump Administration Conceded to Big Tobacco
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin on May 13 criticized the Trump Administration’s Food and Drug Administration for approving the sale and marketing of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for the first time, while also allowing some illegal vaping products to remain on the market. He also linked the regulatory shift to the departure of FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, saying White House pressure on regulators to approve tobacco product applications could create serious public-health consequences.
