Heated Tobacco Demand Increased, and Cigarette Demand Declined in South Korea in 2022

According to South Korea's finance ministry, compared with 2021, the demand for traditional cigarettes dropped by 1.8% in 2022, while the need for heat-not-burn tobacco products soared by 21.3%.

The finance ministry said that despite the government's anti-smoking campaign, cigarette sales in South Korea rose by 1.1% in 2022.

The data from Finance Ministry showed South Korean smokers bought 3.63 billion packs of 20 cigarettes in 2022, above 3.59 billion packages in 2021. However, the number of sales in 2022 has dropped by 16.8% compared to 2014.

 

In January 2015, the government raised the price of cigarettes by 80%, from 2,500 won (13 yuan) per pack to 4,500 won (24 yuan), to reduce smoking rates and tobacco consumption.
