Rising Concerns: Increasing Rampant Counterfeit Trade in Romania
Romanian authorities have seized over 90 million smuggled cigarettes, worth over €15 million, in the first nine months of this year.

According to a news report by Nineoclock on September 24th, the Romanian authorities have seized over 90 million smuggled cigarettes on the black market in the first nine months of this year, with a value exceeding 15 million euros (approximately 120 million RMB). Data from the StopContrabanda.ro platform indicates that the amount confiscated has nearly doubled compared to the same period in 2022.

In 2023, the total quantity of confiscated illicit cigarettes in the southern region accounted for 26% of all counterfeit smuggled products. Over 24 million illicit cigarettes were seized, marking a fivefold increase compared to the same period in 2022. Concurrently, according to official data, Romania has seized counterfeit goods worth over 60 million euros this year.

According to an analysis of the activities of the Romanian border police in the first half of 2023, the volume of counterfeit product trafficking has doubled. The most commonly counterfeited products include cigarettes, clothing, footwear, and cosmetics. Each sale of counterfeit products not only leads to financial losses for the national budget but also poses a significant threat to consumer safety.
