Slovakia Plans to Ban Flavored Nicotine and Disposable E-Cigarettes
Slovakian government may ban flavored nicotine products and disposable e-cigarettes to protect youth and the environment.

According to Teraz's report on November 8th, the Slovak government is considering banning the sale of flavored nicotine products and disposable e-cigarettes. This proposal was submitted to the Slovak National Council by a member of the ruling party, the Social Democratic Party (Smer-SD).

Members of parliament pointed out that the regulation is aimed at reducing the easy access of minors to e-cigarettes, a situation confirmed by the inspection results of the Slovak Trade Inspection (SOI). As a result, they proposed banning the sale of these popular products among adolescents, but exempting mint, menthol, and tobacco flavors. They explained that certain flavors not favored by young people have significance for adult smokers trying to quit, while young people tend to prefer fruit, sweet, and candy flavors.

In addition, disposable e-cigarettes are also being proposed for a ban because these products are popular among the younger generation and pose a significant environmental burden. Therefore, they suggest not allowing the use of attractive elements such as cartoons, stickers, or patterns resembling food, cosmetics, or toys on the packaging.

Legislators have proposed prohibiting the provision of any economic benefits to consumers in the sale of regular tobacco products. According to the proposal, businesses selling smokeless tobacco and related products will be prohibited from offering rewards and giveaways not directly related to these products.

Current laws may be further expanded to allow for fines to be imposed on individual businesses or legal entities that violate sales bans or restrictions. Offenders may face fines of up to 50,000 euros.
