Thailand to Re-categorize Marijuana as Controlled Substance This Year

Thai Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin announced that marijuana will be reclassified as a Category 5 drug this year.

According to Asia News' report on May 21st, Thailand's Minister of Public Health, Somsak Thepsutin, announced on Monday (20th) that marijuana will be reclassified as a Schedule 5 controlled substance within this year.

A survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA Poll) in Thailand showed that 60.38% of respondents "completely agree" with the reclassification of marijuana as a drug, 15.27% "somewhat agree," 14.5% "completely disagree," 8.93% "strongly disagree," and 0.92% did not comment. Additionally, 46.95% of respondents believe that the government should not compensate individuals affected by the reclassification, 35.03% believe compensation should be given to marijuana growers and businesses, and 10.08% believe compensation should only be given to growers. The survey included 1310 individuals aged 15 and older nationwide and was conducted on May 14th and 15th.

According to a NIDA poll, 68.93% of respondents have never used marijuana, while 31.07% have used it at some point.
