Recent research reveals more young New Zealanders are vaping. Vaping among 15- to 17-year-old New Zealanders has increased in two years, from 2% to 6%.

Te Whatu Ora National Public Health ServiceTwice As Many 15 To 17-Year-Old New Zealanders Use Electronic Cigarettes Daily inspected a total of 40 locations over the course of two days in August, and 8 Taranaki stores offered vaping items to individuals under the age of 18. Carly Stevenson, a smoke-free enforcement officer for the Te Whatu Ora National Public Health Service in Taranaki, stated that the outcome was unsatisfactory.

Selling vaping products to minors is unlawful. The only permissible forms of identification are a valid New Zealand driver's license, passport, or 18-plus card if the individual looks to be under the age of 25. Retailers selling Vaping items to minors will be submitted to the Ministry of Health and may be issued an infraction notice, including a $500 infringement cost, or face prosecution.

Recent surveys have shown that a rising proportion of young New Zealand non-smokers are experimenting with and routinely using vaping.

According to the most recent New Zealand Health Survey, the proportion of young New Zealanders aged 15 to 17 who use cannabis every day has quadrupled, from 2% in 2018-19 to 6% in 2020-21. Most vaping products include high concentrations of nicotine, which is highly addictive. There is still a great deal unknown about the health impacts of vaping, and it is never a smart idea for young kids to inhale unknown substances."
