2Firsts, 2025 – According to Montevideo Portal, Uruguayan lawmaker Álvaro Dastugue has introduced a bill proposing a ban on smoking and vaping in certain open public spaces.

The draft law states that its purpose is to protect the population from involuntary exposure to smoke and aerosols generated by tobacco products, marijuana and electronic vaping devices. The ban would apply to parks, squares and public spaces that contain children’s playgrounds, recreational areas or play equipment.

The proposal also includes bus stops, public transport shelters and waiting areas, as well as a radius of no less than 10 metres around such locations.

The initiative has been submitted to the Public Health and Social Assistance Committee of the Chamber of Representatives. The bill provides that violations would be sanctioned with warnings or fines, depending on the seriousness of the offence, with specific criteria to be set out in subsequent regulations.
