US Senator Calls for Action to Protect Public Health from E-cigarette
US Senator Dick Durbin has called on the FDA to take immediate action to protect public health by banning flavored e-cigarettes.

According to a report by American media outlet Riverbender on January 31, US Senator Dick Durbin has spoken out against the plans of countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and France to ban e-cigarettes targeted towards children. He has called on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take immediate action in order to protect the health of the American public.

Devin accuses the leadership of the FDA of incompetence, claiming that their delay in regulating e-cigarettes has allowed big tobacco companies to sell unauthorized and flavored products to children, leading to millions of new addicted customers and exposing schoolchildren to harmful pollutants. He asserts that the United States significantly lags behind other countries on this issue, while the FDA continuously postpones taking action to protect American children.

Debhin emphasizes that regulations should be put in place to prohibit menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars in order to prioritize public health, as these flavors are tactics employed by major tobacco companies to appeal to children.

Prior to this, Durbin urged the FDA to use its authority to protect children from the harms of e-cigarettes and criticized the agency for delaying the review of pre-market tobacco product applications (PMTAs) submitted by manufacturers of e-cigarettes. He, along with Senator Susan Collins, established a bipartisan consensus in the Fiscal Year 2022 Consolidated Appropriations Act, which clearly defined FDA's regulatory authority over products containing synthetic nicotine. This legislative amendment aims to close legal loopholes for manufacturers, preventing them from evading FDA oversight through flavored e-cigarettes and undermining recent progress in curbing youth smoking nationwide.

Dick Deben has shown steadfast determination in his fight against the tobacco industry, largely fueled by his personal experience of losing his father to lung cancer at the age of 14. He has previously spearheaded efforts to ban smoking on airplanes and, during his time in the House of Representatives, has been committed to increasing tobacco taxes and supporting smoking cessation tools, among various other initiatives.
