Adam Afriyie MP Warns of Disposable Bans During the VApril Aaping Awareness Month
During the VApril 2023 reception held in the Churchill Room on Tuesday 28 March, Adam Afriyie warns the industry that there is a bill going through parliament trying to ban all disposable vapes if the industry does not stay under control.

Article by Rui Tian; edited by Jason Tian - John Dunne, the director of UKVIA, started the event discussing the benefits of vaping compared to smoking, arguing that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking, with not a single officially reported death from vaping nicotine anywhere in the world.

Adam Afriyie, MP for Windsor and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Vaping described the vaping industry as “a vibrant industry, doing good things for the country and at the same time doing good things for the economy.”He continued praising the vaping industry for its success in “saving lives”; “7000 people every month are dying of smoking. Nobody has ever died thus far from vaping. It's pretty obvious this is harm reduction. And as I said earlier this year as well, you're and you've actually become part of the healthcare industry. Actually, probably you're saving more lives than many healthcare establishments have done over the last 20 or 30 years.” He encouraged those in the industry to be proud of their work, as they are contributing to the healthcare of the nation, and also to not be shy of their technological advances.

Adam also welcomed representatives from big tobacco manufacturing companies “Yes. There may be a legacy to smoking. Yes, you may be you anthropomorphically your companies may be associated with it, but now you're doing good. So please continue to do good.”

Industry Threats

Adam highlighted two major threats to the industry: (1) nefarious actors producing products that don't meet UK regulations, and (2) children being encouraged to take up vaping. Warned the industry should keep things under control, and emphasized the need for continued responsible practices in the face of potential threats. He warned, "There is a bill going through parliament at the moment that will ban all disposable vapes.” He added that if the industry does not keep things under control “I will probably support that bill.”
