Calls to Ban Mint Flavored Cigarettes in Delaware, US
US lawmakers in Delaware are urging the FDA to immediately ban menthol cigarettes, sparking widespread discussions on flavor tobacco restrictions.

According to a report by American media outlet WMDT, legislators in the state of Delaware are urging the FDA to immediately ban menthol cigarettes. This action has sparked widespread discussions on the progressing movement for a ban on flavored tobacco products.

It's not surprising that the tobacco industry would stop at nothing to make money," said Monica Brooks, chairperson of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Wycomico County. In light of consistent data pointing to a history of targeting two different communities, lawmakers in the state of Delaware are proposing a ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.

Senator Chris Coons has stated that tobacco companies have targeted the marketing and distribution of flavored tobacco products towards adolescents aged 12 to 18, particularly within African American communities, where sales of menthol cigarettes and cigars are more prevalent.

Senator Coon expressed concerns over the use of menthol tobacco by young Americans and black communities, as articulated by numerous organizations and community health advocates. They are urging for a nationwide ban on menthol flavor, not limited to just Delaware.

Monica Brooks, the chairperson of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Wakomiko County, highlights the profound historical relationship between major tobacco companies and the African American community.

Chairperson Brooks stated that continued use of menthol tobacco products increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. She also pointed out that "smoking is a leading cause of preventable deaths in the black community, which is a result of tobacco industry-sponsored events, distribution of free products at festivals, and marketing strategies targeting young people.

Brooks appreciates the legislators in Delaware for pushing the FDA to ban flavored tobacco products such as menthol cigarettes, stating that this initiative helps to safeguard the health of both young people and the black community.
