Continued Allowance of Tobacco Advertising in Swiss Print Media
Swiss National Council intends to continue allowing tobacco advertising in adult newspapers and magazines, despite opposition in parliament.

According to a report by Swiss newspaper Jungfrau Zeitung on January 20th, the Swiss National Council has stated its intention to continue allowing tobacco advertisements in newspapers and magazines targeted towards adults. This decision sharply contrasts with the stance of the parliamentary upper house, which advocates for a strict enforcement of the tobacco advertising ban.

In the 2022 referendum, it was explicitly stated that tobacco advertisements, e-cigarette advertisements, and other nicotine product advertisements should not target children and adolescents. However, the National Social Security and Health Committee (SGK-N) takes the view that tobacco advertisements can still be published in subscribed newspapers and magazines during the sales process, as long as at least 95% of their readers are adults.

This viewpoint was released last Friday by the Congressional Service Agency, but it did not pass in the upper house of parliament.
