According to a report by 4ni on December 7th, the Belfast City Council in the UK will submit a consultation response to the British government regarding the creation of a "smoke-free generation" and proposals to tackle the issue of excessive smoking and e-cigarette use among young people.
The consultation draft has put forward several proposed restrictions on the sale of tobacco and e-cigarette products, including a plan to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarette products throughout the UK.
Micky Murray, Chair of the Belfast City People and Communities Committee and city councilor, has expressed concern over the escalating issue of child and youth smoking in Belfast. Murray emphasized that these products are addictive, harmful to health, and have detrimental effects on the environment. Current sales legislation is deemed insufficient, hence the full support of the city council to strengthen proposals outlined in the consultation draft.
He stated that both tobacco and e-cigarette sales should implement mandatory age checks. Flavors of e-cigarettes should be restricted and packaging should be regulated, while the sale of disposable e-cigarettes should be completely prohibited.
The Belfast City Council is currently implementing purchase tests among retailers to prevent the sale of e-cigarette products to underage teenagers below the age of 18.
Congressman Murray stated that
Although selling e-cigarettes to individuals under the age of 18 is illegal, there are no regulations concerning registration of retailers, limitations on in-store product display, and no resources available to identify illegal and harmful additives.
