Dutch Lawmakers Proposed Neutral and Uniform E-cigarette Packaging

According to RTL Nieuws reports, Dutch lawmakers want e-cigarettes and other vaping products to have a standard and uniform look. The D66 party submitted a proposal to the Dutch parliament to make vaping less attractive to teenagers. A majority in parliament supports the plan.

D66 MP Jeanet van der Laan said, "Young people now think it's cool to have this shiny accessory while vaping, but it's unhealthy. E-cigarettes are similar to lip gloss or markers. They are usually colorful and full of flashing lights. Parents often don't know what young people are carrying, which is worrying."

Van der Laan pointed out that even e-cigarettes look like AirPods on the market. "It makes it look like a fashion accessory when it's for smoking and bad for your health. And young people are easily seduced by these fancy things and start smoking," she said.

"E-cigarettes should look as neutral and uniform as possible, preferably like regular cigarettes, or either white or black. Because it's just smoking," the D66 MP said. The neutral appearance will make it less attractive to young people.

Smoking was discussed in the Dutch parliament's lower house on Wednesday. D66's proposal has the support of a majority.

The Netherlands previously announced a ban on flavored e-cigarette liquids.
