Illegal E-cigarette and Nicotine Pouches Seized in Sydney West
Australian TGA seizes over $230,000 worth of illegal e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches in Sydney, violating therapeutic goods laws.

  • The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) found a significant quantity of illegal e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches in western Sydney.

According to a report by Pharmacy Daily on March 27th, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) seized over 5,000 e-cigarettes and 7,000 nicotine pouches in the Penrith area of western Sydney. The black market value of the seized items is estimated to be over $360,000 ($230,000 USD).

 

The TGA has accused these products of being held or supplied illegally, in violation of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989.

 

Currently, therapeutic e-cigarettes can only be sold in participating pharmacies for smoking cessation and nicotine dependence management, while nicotine pouches are classified as strictly controlled prescription drugs.

The meeting comes as China advances mandatory standards for heated cigarettes and nicotine pouches, laying groundwork for their domestic introduction. Cattoni has held senior roles in PMI’s heated tobacco development, while China’s draft standard covers multiple heating architectures, including systems similar in principle to PMI’s IQOS ILUMA technology.

U.S. President Donald Trump has chosen White House health policy aide Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. Overton currently works on health policy at the White House and previously held a senior role at the America First Policy Institute. If confirmed by the Senate, she would take over an FDA that has experienced months of senior-level turnover. According to Ukrainska Pravda, Russian strikes on the Kyiv region during the night of Aug. 4-5, 2026, damaged warehouses storing products of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and Imperial Brands Ukraine. JTI said a finished goods warehouse in Kyiv Oblast was destroyed, with no employees injured, and that it did not expect disruptions to retail supplies. Imperial Brands Ukraine said products stored at warehouses of distributors and retail partners were affected and estimated losses from the strikes at “tens of millions of Ukrainian hryvnias” (roughly hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars).

China Tobacco Yunnan files patent for cellulose-free nicotine pouch scaffold to replace microcrystalline cellulose
China Tobacco Yunnan Industrial Co., Ltd. has filed a patent application for a cellulose-free scaffold material for nicotine pouches, proposing a combination of bioceramic material, polydextrose and sugar alcohols to replace conventional microcrystalline cellulose and cellulose derivatives. The filing aims to address issues including powdery mouthfeel, residue and limited release control, while also reducing reliance on existing cellulose-based patent portfolios. In patent examples, one fast-release formulation reached a nicotine release rate of 50% at 10 minutes and more than 90% at 20 minutes.
