Illegal Tobacco Products Worth Over $80,000 Seized in South Australia
Newly established task force in South Australia seized over $80,000 worth of illegal tobacco products, cracking down on illicit trade.

According to a report by Wearesa on August 9th, a newly established special task force in South Australia has seized illegal tobacco products worth over $80,000 Australian dollars.

The state government is investing an additional $16 million in setting up a dedicated task force within the Consumer and Business Services (CBS) to combat the growing problem of illegal trade.

Since July 1st, CBS has taken on the enforcement responsibilities for tobacco and e-cigarette products. They have conducted inspections at over 130 locations in the Greater Adelaide area, and have carried out a series of raids in the northeastern region of Adelaide.

In this raid operation, over 75,000 illegal cigarettes and over 20 kilograms of illegal tobacco products (including tobacco pouches and waterpipes) were seized, valued at over $80,000 AUD. CBS is considering enforcement measures that may include prosecution and fines.

CBS is evaluating and investigating multiple leads, and will continue to work with local and national authorities to combat illegal tobacco and e-cigarette trade.

Consumer Affairs Commissioner Martyn Campbell stated that the sale of illegal tobacco and e-cigarettes poses significant risks to public health.

I urge anyone who knows of illegal operators to report to us - you can report anonymously through the CBS website. We are still in the early stages and continue to gather intelligence to plan our next steps. However, we promise to take action, and these raids should serve as a warning to illegal distributors.
