Kola Karim Appointed as Chairman of BAT Nigeria's Advisory Committee
Kola Karim, the current Agbaoye of Ibadan, will take over as the Chairman of BAT Nigeria's Advisory Council from November 1, 2023.

British American Tobacco Nigeria (BAT Nigeria) has announced that Kola Karim will assume the role of Chairman of its Advisory Committee starting from November 1, 2023. Currently, Karim serves as the Agbaoye of Ibadan land and holds a managerial position within the company.

Nigeria’s House of Representatives said it will review the National Tobacco Control Act to address regulatory gaps around emerging nicotine products such as e-cigarettes and to strengthen border controls and enforcement coordination. A relevant committee visited the headquarters of the Nigeria Customs Service, stressing linkage and cooperation among the NDLEA, NAFDAC and Customs.

At a parliamentary committee meeting in South Africa, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the health department has agreed to exempt non-combustible and smokeless products — including chewing tobacco, snus, nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes — from the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill. The department is prepared, at this stage, to exempt them from packaging and labelling requirements except for misleading or false claims.

Brazil’s National School Health Survey (PeNSE) 2024 found that e-cigarette experimentation among students aged 13 to 17 rose from 16.8% in 2019 to 29.6% in 2024, while use in the previous 30 days increased from 8.6% to 26.3%. Over the same period, conventional cigarette experimentation fell from 22.6% to 18.5%, and hookah use declined from 26.9% to 16.4%.
