According to an article from the Florida Health News website on October 5th, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a lawsuit against e-cigarette manufacturing company JUUL Labs. The lawsuit accuses the company of improperly marketing their products to children and providing misleading information regarding the nicotine content in their products.
Moody's office has filed a lawsuit in the Hillsborough County Circuit Court seeking civil damages and requesting an injunction to prevent JUUL from targeting children through its marketing and product design, as well as deceiving consumers about nicotine concentration. The lawsuit alleges that JUUL has violated a law called the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
The lawsuit alleges that "JUUL engaged in aggressive marketing targeted at underage users. It developed a technology-centered, sleekly designed product that is easily concealable, and sold its products in flavors that are popular among underage users.
In response, JUUL has stated that Florida has expressed its refusal to participate in the company's settlement with the 48 states and territories of the United States. The company further highlights the measures it has already taken, including "discontinuing the sale of non-tobacco, non-menthol products under FDA guidance, ceasing marketing campaigns, and implementing a restructuring focused on combating underage usage.
They assert that as a result of these efforts, the amount of underage usage of JUUL products has decreased by 95%.
