According to the original report, a cigar manufacturing facility in Dothan, Alabama, is set to close, and its parent company, Philip Morris International U.S. (PMI U.S.), announced the decision on Wednesday.
PMI U.S. says the closure reflects a focus on smoke-free business priorities
PMI U.S., the parent company of Swedish Match, said the decision to close the Columbia Highway factory came from its need to maintain a sharp focus on its business priority of offering reduced-risk, FDA-authorized smoke-free options to legal-aged adult nicotine users in America to help them move away from combustible cigarettes.
Peter Luongo, managing director of cigars at PMI U.S., said the closure of the Dothan manufacturing operation reflects the company’s focus on operating efficiently and sustainably across all aspects of its business and on accelerating the growth of its smoke-free business in America.
The closure will affect about 54 jobs, while 20 employees will remain temporarily
In a statement, the company said the closure of the Swedish Match Dothan factory will eliminate around 54 local jobs.
At the same time, the company said 20 employees will be retained for now to support ongoing business needs before the facility is fully shut down.
The company has not announced an official closure date
Peter Luongo also said the decision does not diminish the company’s pride in the work done in Dothan, adding that the dedication, craftsmanship and teamwork of employees there have had a meaningful impact on the business.
PMI U.S. has not disclosed an official date for the closure of the facility.
