Rising Popularity of Nicotine Pouches in the UK
A new study from King's College London reveals a doubling in nicotine pouch usage over four years, reaching 5.4%.

On January 10th, King's College London announced on its official website that a new study found that the use of nicotine pouches has doubled in the past four years, reaching 5.4%.


A new study conducted by the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London in collaboration with the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) organization has found that approximately 1% of UK adults (18 and over) and teenagers (11-18 years old) are currently using nicotine pouches. The study was published in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.


Researchers analyzed data from the UK Adult Smokeless Survey from 2020 to 2024 and the UK Youth Smokeless Survey from 2024 to evaluate whether respondents have ever used or are currently using nicotine pouches, as well as other sociodemographic information. The data showed that the proportion of UK adults who had ever used nicotine pouches doubled to 5.4% between 2020 and 2024, but only 1% of respondents said they were currently using them. Among adolescents, 1.2% of respondents reported currently using them.


This research was published in the "Tobacco and E-Cigarette Act" as it entered the committee review stage in the Lower House. The bill specifies the legal age for the sale of nicotine pouches as 18 years old, prohibits related advertising, and allows for government regulation of the ingredients, brands, and displays of the products.

Philip Morris Malaysia Again Meets Religious Authority Over Cigarette Alternatives as Perlis Mufti Responds on Halal Criteria
Philip Morris Malaysia Managing Director Naeem Shahab Khan met Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin on September 17 and presented the company's shift from conventional cigarettes toward alternative products. The mufti said a product could be considered halal if it is clean, its side effects are not harmful or can be controlled, and it does not involve excessive waste. His remarks did not mention IQOS or any other specific PMI product and did not amount to a new product-specific religious ruling. It was at least the second publicly reported engagement between Philip Morris Malaysia and a Malaysian religious institution over cigarette alternatives within six months.

The U.S. FDA has consolidated two tobacco establishment registration and product listing forms into a redesigned Form FDA 3741 covering all regulated product categories, including e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products and nicotine pouches. Japan Tobacco (JT) will launch MEVIUS Tropical Option, a new tobacco stick for Ploom, nationwide in Japan from October 6, 2026. The capsule-format product combines mango-oriented sweetness with menthol cooling, adding a tropical flavor to the MEVIUS Ploom tobacco-stick lineup for the first time. Private antitrust litigation stemming from Altria's 2018 $12.8 billion investment for a 35% economic interest in JUUL is advancing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Direct purchasers, indirect purchasers and indirect resellers of JUUL products filed answering briefs this week seeking to preserve class certifications granted by a California federal court in February. Altria and JUUL argue that individual consumers and large distributors differ too much in purchasing terms to remain in a single direct-purchaser class, while a separate dispute concerns whether California antitrust law can apply to indirect purchasers across 27 jurisdictions. A September trial has been put on hold during the appeal.

Italian Financial Police Seize 4.3 Million E-Cigarettes and Smoking Accessories; 28 Reported to Judicial Authorities Across Operations
Italy's Guardia di Finanza announced on October 28 that officers in Latina province had seized approximately 4.3 million e-cigarettes and smoking accessories at an unauthorized warehouse in an operation involving restrictions on the possession and sale of tobacco-related products. Another 300,000 suspected counterfeit or unsafe items were confiscated during separate inspections, bringing total seizures across the operations to more than 4.6 million products. Twenty-eight people were reported to judicial authorities over suspected smuggling and counterfeiting offenses. Officials did not disclose separate vape quantities, the value of the merchandise or alleged violations associated with individual brands.
