According to a recent report from CBS 42, schools in the city of Auburn, Alabama are taking proactive measures to address the increasing issue of student e-cigarette use. The schools have implemented an e-cigarette testing program, which will include the installation of e-cigarette sensors to monitor students' e-cigarette usage.
The school system administrator Justin Long emphasized the importance of sensors. If a student is detected using an e-cigarette, the cameras outside the school bathroom will simultaneously sound an alarm.
Cameras will trigger with the e-cigarette incident, so when you see one event, you will also see the other event, without needing to search for the timeline, it will just appear on the screen.
The use of these sensors has led to a rapid reduction in e-cigarette smoking incidents on campus.
This monthly chart shows the first month after we installed the sensors, we received 148 alerts. The following month, this number dropped to 85, and in the current month, we only have 41 alerts. So you can clearly see a downward trend in incidents happening in the high school, which is really good news.
Vice Principal Jamie Rice expressed gratitude for this.
Our school in Auburn is very fortunate to have the resources to install any useful technology, which is a great addition to our campus and can help us guide students to make healthy decisions and keep them safe during their time at Auburn High School.
Currently, the school is planning to install sensors in each high school restroom during the summer, and is also exploring the possibility of expanding the project to elementary school students.
