According to a recent report by the Malaysian Press Agency, Selangor state is considering joining the ranks of Terengganu, Penang, Kedah, Johor, and Kelantan in banning the sale of e-cigarettes and vaping products.
Amirudin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor, recently stated that the state will decide in the coming days on whether to implement the ban. The Chair of the Public Health Committee, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, will submit the proposed policy to the State Executive Council for their decision.
Amiruddin pointed out that the state government will make a decision this week or next week based on existing discussions and facts. He emphasized that public health and the health of the next generation will be the priority factors when considering whether to ban e-cigarette products.
Additionally, Amirudin said that the government is currently in discussions with e-cigarette retailers and manufacturers regarding the interests of the relevant industries and businesses. Due to the fact that many e-cigarette production and sales companies are headquartered in Selangor, the implementation of the ban may have an impact on them.
As of now, Terengganu, Pahang, and Kedah have decided to ban the sale of e-cigarettes, while Johor and Kelantan have already implemented the ban. On May 20th, Selangor state held a meeting chaired by Jamal Maria, requesting local governments to remove advertisements related to e-cigarettes in order to curb their usage.
In addition, according to the statement last month by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, the use of e-cigarettes is increasingly linked to the abuse of new synthetic drugs.
