According to a report by WKYC on September 26th, the city council of Brunswick, United States, has taken measures to temporarily suspend the approval of tobacco product sales licenses. District 2 councilman, Nicholas Hanek, stated that this decision was made in response to the escalating issue of underage e-cigarette abuse.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flavored e-cigarettes and disposable e-cigarettes pose a health threat to young people in the United States. In 2022, over 2.5 million teenagers reported using e-cigarettes, prompting the center to emphasize that underage individuals using any form of tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, is unsafe.
Ohio raised the minimum purchasing age for smoking and e-cigarettes to 21 in 2019, but this measure has proven ineffective in preventing individuals under the age of 21 from buying these products.
Hanek explained, "We had previously attempted to address this issue by temporarily suspending e-cigarette stores, but found that some individuals were still circumventing the regulations. Therefore, we have now expanded this temporary ban to include the sale of all tobacco and e-cigarette products.
This suspension will last for six months until local officials can gain a better understanding of the situation regarding underage smoking and the use of e-cigarettes in the city of Brunswick.
