Recently, 2FIRSTS discovered on the leading e-cigarette retail website Generalvape in the United States that the e-cigarette brand iJoy has launched a disposable e-cigarette with AI voice control function called iJoy Uranus 25000, priced at $19.99.

The First AI Voice-controlled Disposable

According to reports, iJoy has claimed that their product is the "world's first disposable e-cigarette with AI voice control capability," allowing users to operate the e-cigarette via voice commands. Although there is currently no physical demonstration video available, an animated demo video has been released showing the product able to switch modes based on different commands.

Similar to mainstream disposable e-cigarette products in the current US market, the iJoy Uranus 25000 features a 3.0-inch display screen that can show battery life and e-liquid information.

But what is even more noteworthy is that the device is said to use six 0.35Ω mesh heating wires, which is relatively rare in the current mainstream "dual-use" disposable e-cigarette market. This is also one of the biggest selling points of the product.

In addition, the iJoy Uranus 25000 comes preloaded with 20mL of e-liquid and an 850mAh rechargeable battery, supporting up to 25,000 puffs. The device offers two modes: regular mode (25W) and enhanced mode (40W), allowing users to adjust the power according to their personal preferences and offering 15 flavor options.

This may be the first voice-controlled disposable e-cigarette to date, but it is not iJoy's first voice-controlled product. As early as 2018, iJoy released a MOD-type e-cigarette with voice control functionality - the IJOY Avenger 270, which claimed that its "greatest achievement lies in the voice control system, allowing users to adjust the device through voice recognition mechanisms.

Voice Control has been Around for Quite Some Time

The use of voice control technology in "vaping" products is not uncommon, with another product, the Smok I-Priv, allowing users to control the device through voice commands.

Smok stated that the product supports voice recognition prompts, allowing users to activate voice recognition by saying "hello, I-Priv." Commands in this mode include: "best power" - "power on" - "power off" - "power off" - "power mode" - "TC mode" - "lock device" - "unlock device" - "turn on light" - "turn off light" - "SOS" - "light flashing" - "light color" - "screen color" - "voice playback.

From voice-controlled "big smoke" to this "AI voice-controlled" disposable e-cigarette product, the voice control feature is the latest embodiment of traditional e-cigarette functions being decentralized. In addition, 2FIRSTS noted that iJoy applied for AI's 24 categories of tobacco and smoking accessories international classification trademark in 2017, but at that time the registration may have been for promoting the IJOY Avenger 270. Some video bloggers have tested the AI function of the iJOY Avenger 270, attempting to use voice commands to change the product's color and lighting effects.

Is Voice Control Technology Complex?

Speech recognition technology is at the core of voice control, responsible for converting users' voice commands into text or specific commands. E-cigarette devices can process voice data locally through built-in speech recognition chips. For example, the iJoy Avenger 270 and SMOK I-Priv both utilize this technology to enable basic voice commands.

Some manufacturers have specifically developed voice chips for e-cigarettes. 2FIRSTS investigated and found that in 2022, Shenzhen Vochi Sound Electronics Co., Ltd. proposed a design scheme for the application of voice chips in e-cigarettes (WT588F02KD-24SS). They believe that future electronic products will inevitably need to display battery levels and incorporate stylish lighting effects, while also expanding functionality for voice prompts and music playback. This scheme provides a solution for combining display and voice functions.

According to the procurement website "iProcurement," the design scheme of the Weichuang Zhiyin WT588F02KD-24SS is priced between 1.9-2.0 yuan per unit. Some chips that only have voice recognition capabilities have a price advantage, with prices as low as 0.1 yuan per unit. If combined with manufacturers or brands' own solutions, the cost of e-cigarettes with voice recognition control capabilities will be further reduced.

At present, it is not clear what kind of chip and solution iJoy has adopted, but its exploration and layout in this field have long been established. According to Tianyancha, iJoy applied for a patent for a "voice-controlled e-cigarette" in 2018, which includes a voice input module, control module, drive module, step-down module, and atomizer.

Currently, the iJoy Uranus 25000 with voice control technology can be seen as an innovation that has a competitive advantage and has brought a new selling point to the US market. However, the widespread adoption of this technology still faces some challenges, including cost, practicality, and the accuracy of voice recognition. Whether it can become mainstream depends on further technological advancements and user acceptance. If future products can address current flaws and improve usability, voice control has the potential to become an important feature in the e-cigarette market.

2FIRSTS will continue to follow the developments of this feature, stay tuned.
