Top 10 Fastest Growing Patents in Tobacco and Technology
PMI leads e-cigarette patent filings as tobacco alternatives increase, while Samsung topples IBM in overall patents obtained.

According to data from IFI Claims Patent Services, tobacco-related products, especially electronic cigarettes and heated non-combustible products, are one of the top 10 fastest growing technologies in terms of US patent grants in 2022.


Philip Morris International (PMI) is replacing its combustible cigarette business with less harmful alternatives, specifically in the "electronic cigarette/tobacco business." PMI is currently the leading company in this field, having submitted 1,364 patent applications in 2022.


Samsung, a South Korean electronics giant, has overtaken longtime leader IBM to claim the top spot in patent ownership. Following Samsung and IBM, the top eight patent holders in order are Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Huawei, Canon, LG Electronics, Qualcomm, Intel, Apple, and Toyota Motor Corporation.


The fastest growing technologies listed are electric digital data processing with a compound annual growth rate of 33.9%, specialized features related to Earth drilling such as artificial intelligence and simulation models with a 32.5% compound annual growth rate, computing based on biological models with a compound annual growth rate of 32.1%, and electric smoking devices with a 31.3% compound annual growth rate.


The compound annual growth rate for cigars and cigarettes is 28.3%.

Ispire Technology reported FY2026 revenue of about $96 million, down 24.7% year over year, as U.S. cannabis-vapor hardware and European e-cigarette sales declined by $17.4 million and $12.7 million, respectively. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 32.5% to $26.7 million, while quarterly gross margin fell to 6.3%. For FY2027, the company is prioritizing Malaysia manufacturing and vapor ODM while continuing to develop nicotine pouches, IKE Tech age-verification technology and G-Mesh licensing. Ispire has not separately disclosed the revenue or profit contribution of those newer businesses.

Based on Circana OmniMarket Total U.S. Convenience data for the 52 weeks ending June 14, 2026, cigarettes remained the largest category with $50.8 billion in sales, but unit sales declined 5.3%. Electronic smoking devices and vaping products also declined, while modern oral nicotine products continued to grow, with nicotine pouch sales rising 29% in dollars and 17% in units.
