UK Aims to Cut Smoking Rate to 5% by Offering Vapes for Smokers
The British government plans to encourage up to 1 million smokers to switch from cigarettes to vapes, with pregnant women receiving financial incentives for the change. Under the scheme, nearly 1 in 5 smokers will receive a vape starter kit and support to quit smoking. The government aims to reduce the smoking population from 13% to 5% or less.
"Up to two out of three lifelong smokers will die from smoking. Cigarettes are the only product on sale which will kill you if used correctly," Health Minister Neil O’Brien will say in a speech later on April 11, the government said.
In 2021-22, the UK spent £68 million ($84.52 million) on local authority measures to help people quit smoking, leading to 100,000 smokers quitting, reports Reuters. The media also has reported a 3% increase from 6% in e-cigarette use among 11 to 15-year-olds in the country between 2018 and 2021. To prevent illegal vape sales to minors, the government will establish an enforcement squad with £3 million ($3.73 million) in funding.
