Australia Implements Stricter Regulations on E-Cigarettes to Curb Youth Usage

Australian Federal Government strengthens crackdown on e-cigarettes among primary school students, banning disposable e-cigarettes effective January 1, 2024.

According to a report from the Daily Freeman on January 4th, the Australian federal government has intensified its crackdown on e-cigarettes as their popularity increases among elementary school students. The new regulations will officially come into effect on January 1st, 2024. This decision has garnered strong support from Charles Gough, the Executive Principal of Debo Academy.

The key provisions of the new regulation include a ban on disposable e-cigarettes, aiming to curb the alarming trend among students. Principal Gao Qi, who oversees implementation, describes this as a "highly positive measure" that will make it more difficult for young people to access e-cigarettes. He emphasizes that this ban, along with enforcement measures and ongoing education and support provided by schools, will have a significant positive impact on addressing the serious threat posed to student health by e-cigarettes.

According to a federal government investigation, disposable e-cigarettes have become the preferred choice for 80% of school students. Among teenagers aged 16 to 24, 16.5% admit to being regular e-cigarette users, a significant increase from the previous 11.1%. Shockingly, even elementary school students have been found vaping on school premises.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said, "The ban on disposable e-cigarettes is only the first step in the government's e-cigarette reform."

Starting from March 1, 2024, the rechargeable e-cigarettes will also be prohibited, and there will be further regulations on flavors, nicotine concentration levels, and packaging.
