Australian government cracks down on illegal e-cigarette sales: Mirage News

Australian authorities seize 1,700 illegal e-cigarettes in Northern Territory crackdown, issuing over $93,000 in fines to retailers.

According to Mirage News on October 21st, a crackdown in the Northern Territory of Australia resulted in the seizure of around 1,700 illegal e-cigarettes, and five retailers were issued a total of over $93,000 in fines.

This action is part of the Australian government's e-cigarette reform, with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) working in conjunction with the Northern Territory Department of Health and the police to investigate illegal supply of e-cigarettes and nicotine products within the Northern Territory.

This joint operation investigated around 60 businesses in Darwin and Katherine. In accordance with the 2024 Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (e-cigarette reform) Act, e-cigarettes can only be supplied by pharmacies in Australia, and other retailers such as tobacco shops and convenience stores are not allowed to sell any type of e-cigarette.

As of now, since January 1, 2024, Australian Border Force and the Therapeutic Goods Administration have jointly seized over 5.8 million e-cigarette products, with a total estimated value exceeding 174.6 million Australian dollars. There are plans to further conduct joint enforcement actions in various states and territories.

BAT expands facial age-estimation checks: over 600 stores covered in Europe, targeting 1,000 by year-end

BAT has partnered with the Channel Islands Co-operative Society and Yoti to pilot facial age estimation in 10 Coop stores across Jersey. Customers scan a QR code and take a selfie; the system instantly deletes the image and returns only a yes/no against a minimum age threshold (set at 20) for the pilot. BAT already uses Yoti in 600+ stores across Europe and plans to reach 1,000 by year-end.
