【2Firsts news flash】According to Stoke Nub News on July 31st, a self-storage facility in Stoke-on-Trent, England, was found to contain nearly £700,000 (approximately $920,000) worth of illegal tobacco and e-cigarette products, including 638,380 cigarettes, 108 kilograms of hand-rolling tobacco, and 1,262 e-cigarettes. The total retail value of these items is £671,363 (approximately $886,060). Currently, the individuals renting the storage facility are "under investigation.

 

Amjid Wazir, a cabinet member responsible for city honors, environment, and sustainable development in Stoke-Trent City Council, has warned that those involved in illegal tobacco storage, distribution, or sales will face serious consequences. Wazir added:

 

“The scale of smuggling and counterfeiting involved in this organized crime is significant. The products are being sold in stores without concern for the buyers, even willing to sell to children. Our information is clear - those involved in the crime will be held accountable. We are committed to making Stoke-on-Trent a more environmentally friendly, fair, clean, and safe city, and keeping these items off our streets.”

 

This work is part of Operation CeCe, a nationwide initiative working in collaboration with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and National Trading Standards to combat illegal tobacco.

 

The Chairman of the National Trading Standards, Lord Michael Bichard, stated:

 

“Illegal tobacco trade is being led by organized crime gangs, posing serious risks to local communities, especially young people. Since its launch in January 2021, Operation CeCe has removed 69 million illegal cigarettes, 19,750 kilograms of hand-rolling tobacco, and nearly 175 kilograms of shisha products from the market, helping to combat illegal trading and protect communities and legitimate businesses in the UK.”
