·The proposed ban will need approval from the European Commission before it can be implemented.
·The Bulgarian parliament recently passed the ban with overwhelming support in the first reading.
According to recent reports from the Bulgarian News Agency, during the second the revision of the Tobacco and Related Products Act, the Bulgarian Parliamentary Committee on Economic Policy and Innovation stated that the ban on e-cigarettes will be implemented once it receives approval from the European Commission.
The bill was proposed in February 2025 by Kostadin Angelov, a member of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), calling for a comprehensive ban on the sale, use, and promotion of e-cigarettes (disposable and reusable e-cigarettes) as well as energy drinks intended for children.
The chairman of the committee, and member of the United Left group of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Petar Kanev, stated that this legislation is one of the most anticipated laws in recent years. In February, the parliament passed the bill on its first reading with 197 votes in favor and 0 against.
At the committee meeting, members discussed the implementation schedule of the legislation, taking into consideration the requirements to notify the European Commission about specific clauses. They unanimously agreed that, although the bill will continue to undergo a second reading in parliament, implementation will be pending the formal notification from Brussels.
