Call to Candidates: Protect Public Health by Avoiding Tobacco Distribution
15 anti-smoking organizations have called on candidates in Bangladesh's 12th parliamentary election to avoid distributing and using tobacco products.

According to a report by Tbs News on January 2, 15 anti-smoking organizations have issued a joint statement urging candidates for the 12th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh to refrain from distributing and using various tobacco products during the ongoing election campaign, in order to protect public health.

 

The statement warned that the continued use of tobacco products during the election process would have a devastating impact on public mental health, especially among young people.

 

According to reports, the tobacco usage rate in Bangladesh has reached an alarming level, with 37.8 million adults using tobacco products. Additionally, 38.4 million people are exposed to second-hand smoke in workplaces, public transport, and other public places. An estimated 161,000 deaths occur each year, linked to tobacco consumption.

 

Bangladesh is one of the earliest countries to sign the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) by the World Health Organization. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh has pledged to establish a smoke-free nation by 2040. In order to fulfill this commitment, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has initiated the process of revising tobacco laws.

 

The anti-smoking organization mentioned in their statement that if all candidates participating in the ongoing 12th National Parliament election can pledge to refrain from distributing and using tobacco products, it would be a significant milestone. This decision would also be a crucial step towards achieving a smoke-free Bangladesh.

According to Ukrainska Pravda, Russian strikes on the Kyiv region during the night of Aug. 4-5, 2026, damaged warehouses storing products of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and Imperial Brands Ukraine. JTI said a finished goods warehouse in Kyiv Oblast was destroyed, with no employees injured, and that it did not expect disruptions to retail supplies. Imperial Brands Ukraine said products stored at warehouses of distributors and retail partners were affected and estimated losses from the strikes at “tens of millions of Ukrainian hryvnias” (roughly hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars).

Less than a week after JUUL2 received U.S. FDA marketing authorization on August 28, 2026, JUUL Labs was sued for patent infringement in federal court in Delaware. AJ Marketing LLC filed the complaint on September 3, alleging that both JUUL 1 and JUUL2 infringe U.S. Patent No. 8,851,068 B2. The patent covers aspects of programmable electronic vaporization devices, including controls over dose delivery, usage frequency and operating parameters. The plaintiff is seeking reasonable royalties and ongoing royalties tied to the remaining life of the patent. JUUL has not yet publicly responded to the case.

(JSIC) has completed its 2026-2028 heated device procurement project, with Shenzhen Smoore Technology Limited securing final supply contracts for three lots: U1, C1 and C2. The project was launched through a public tender in June 2026 to support overseas markets and involved heated tobacco devices carrying JSIC’s “iRod” trademark. China’s Jiangsu Tobacco Monopoly Bureau and Jiangsu Provincial Medical Products Administration have issued a joint notice targeting illegal production and sales of vape products disguised as medical devices. The notice identifies six categories of violations, including obtaining medical licenses through false materials, misusing medical device credentials, expanding production beyond approved scopes, and using medical device-related online platforms to promote or sell vape products. China Tobacco Hubei Industrial Co., Ltd. disclosed several oral nicotine-related patent applications in August 2026, including two that approach staged nicotine release from different directions. One uses a high-viscosity membrane that forms inside the pouch after contact with saliva to slow rapid early release, while the other uses gradient particles with a faster-disintegrating outer layer and a slower core to create a fast-to-sustained release profile. Together, the filings explore how nicotine pouches could balance initial delivery with release later in use.
