Key points:
A report from the Danish National Institute of Public Health shows that the percentage of young people aged 15 to 29 using e-cigarettes is projected to increase from 7% to 12% between 2022 and 2024, with an estimated 136,000 individuals using e-cigarettes.
The Danish government has implemented multiple measures to prevent the illegal sale of e-cigarettes, but the effectiveness of these measures is not yet clear.
The Minister of Health stated that the government will be implementing a new prevention plan in order to further curb the rising use of e-cigarettes.
According to a report on Danish smoking habits compiled by the National Public Health Institute for the Danish Health Authority and reported on by DR on February 27th, approximately 136,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 29 in Denmark are expected to use e-cigarettes from 2022 to 2024, with the usage rate increasing from 7% to 12%.
Minister of Health Sophie Løhde has expressed concern about this issue, noting that the government has already taken measures to address the problem. For example, since 2022, only tobacco and mint-flavored e-cigarettes have been legally sold, with all other flavors banned. However, data shows that the number of young people using fruit-flavored e-cigarettes has increased by nearly 46,000 between 2022 and 2024.
In order to address this situation, Denmark has introduced a new prevention plan. Sophie Løhde acknowledges that some preventative measures have only recently taken effect, so they may not yet be reflected in the latest research data. She added that this may mean the government still needs to take more measures to reverse this trend.
