According to a report from boingboing on October 5, the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service in the UK has released a photograph revealing the aftermath of an England fire caused by a charging e-cigarette. While the investigation is still ongoing, their recommendation is to "ensure (e-cigarette devices) comply with UK standards and are sourced from recommended manufacturers," suggesting that purchasing unbranded products from the Chelmsford market in Essex may not be a wise idea.
Firefighters rushed to Chelmsford's Chadwell Avenue after receiving a distress call. Upon arriving at the scene, the residents returning home noticed thick smoke emitting from a window on the upper floor and promptly dialed the emergency hotline. The fire crew discovered that one of the bedrooms on the third floor was already engulfed in flames. Officials from the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service revealed that firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus successfully extinguished the fire. They stated that the fire was ignited due to an e-cigarette being charged at the time.
Frequent incidents of lithium battery fires caused by low-quality chargers and electronic devices have raised concerns regarding product quality.
