Key Points:
·Key proposal: Calls for a comprehensive EU ban on e-cigarettes in order to prevent a new generation from becoming addicted to nicotine.
·Main argument: E-cigarettes contain a variety of flavors that attract young people, seeming healthy but actually being addictive.
·Policy Background: The European Union is currently discussing measures to prevent the abuse of tobacco and alcohol.
According to Nicotine Science and Policy on June 23rd, Belgian Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister Frank Vandenbroucke called for European Union member states to ban the sale of e-cigarettes within Europe, hoping to close the single market and prevent the e-cigarette industry and its products from entering. Vandenbroucke made these remarks during a speech at the Luxembourg Health Committee, where the agenda also included discussions on measures to prevent the use and consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and other tobacco products. Vanderbrook said:
"The European Commission has established an ambitious anti-cancer agenda. We believe that including e-cigarettes and vaping in this movement is also important. The current situation is concerning: the vaping industry is hooking a new generation of young people on nicotine by selling a variety of flavored e-cigarettes. These e-cigarettes may seem harmless, but they are actually very dangerous and can be addictive."
