According to a report by N.News on June 28, Hongik University's Public Design Research Center has released a new design manual for a "partitioned smoking room" aimed at addressing public complaints about secondhand smoke and enhancing its social benefits.
The Public Design Research Center at Hongik University recently announced that they have completed the development of a "partitioned smoking room" as part of a design project for resolving social conflicts.
Since 2012, there has been a trend towards a "smoke-free standard" in society. In many major city areas, conflicts between smokers and non-smokers have become frequent. Despite those who smoke in smoke-free areas being excluded, issues caused by smoking in non-smoking areas, including second-hand smoke problems in public places and even shared residences, often spark conflicts.
These conflicts sometimes escalate into violent incidents, putting pressure on local governments to handle complaints related to smoking.
According to Lee Hyun-seong of the Public Design Research Center at Hongik University, this newly released smoking room design handbook focuses on enhancing the public nature of existing smoking rooms in public places that have been haphazardly created.
The main difference between this new design of smoking room and existing smoking rooms is that they have divided the smoking area into sections for regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. This was done to enhance the efficiency of the smoking room, as many individuals who use e-cigarettes were reluctant to use smoking rooms due to issues with the smell of traditional cigarettes.
In addition, starting in November 2022, the Seongdong district government in South Korea has introduced "smart smoking rooms" for the first time, and plans to incorporate this partitioned smoking room format into future expansion plans.
