According to a report from Balipolitika.com on June 15, 2025, the National Committee on Tobacco Control in Indonesia awarded the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, at the Manhattan Hotel in Jakarta for successfully implementing the Smoke-Free Zone local regulation (KTR) across the province. Bali, along with three other provinces, received this honor at the National Coordination Meeting on Tobacco Control Affairs organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Health.
Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian and Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin jointly awarded provinces in Bali, Bangka Belitung Islands, South Sumatra, and South Kalimantan for their full implementation of smoke-free regulations in all districts and cities.
Luh Ayu Aryani, the Assistant of Economic and Development Affairs in the province of Bali, accepted an award on behalf of the governor, thanking the government for recognizing Bali's efforts in tobacco control. Aryani stated that Bali designated specific areas as smoke-free zones in 2011 through Bali Provincial Regulation No. 10, prohibiting smoking, selling, or promoting tobacco products in these areas.
Ariani added that this award will motivate the province of Bali to work even harder to implement relevant regulations, strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts, protect populations vulnerable to the effects of tobacco, especially youth, and reduce the harm of secondhand smoke in public places. Current regulations include restrictions on retail tobacco sales, a ban on selling tobacco within 200 meters of educational facilities and children's playgrounds, and a ban on tobacco advertising within 500 meters.
Minister of the Interior Tito Canaviani stressed the need for the government to strengthen interventions to change public perceptions of tobacco consumption. Building on synchronized policies between the central and local governments, a nationwide implementation plan for wider smoke-free areas will be promoted to ensure smoke-free environments are achieved nationwide.
