Indonesian E-cigarette Association Promoting Education on Alternative Tobacco Products

Indonesian e-cigarette association promotes tobacco alternatives to reduce smoking rates, backed by UK study on their efficacy.

According to a report from ANTARA News on May 13th, Paido Siahaan, the chairman of the Indonesian e-cigarette association (Akvindo), stated that they are actively promoting education on alternative tobacco products to reduce smoking prevalence.

Xi Haan in Jakarta stated that he hopes the government will actively participate in public education on alternative tobacco products. They are also willing to collaborate with the government to provide ongoing educational activities for the public. He also mentioned that consumer associations play an important role in providing credible information about alternative tobacco products to the public.

According to a study released by the UK Health Security Agency (formerly known as Public Health England), evidence review on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products shows that they can reduce the risks of smoking by 90-95% and help more smokers to quit their habits.

A study titled "The Impact of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems on Smoking Cessation" at Burn University further confirms that the use of alternative tobacco products can increase smoking cessation success rates by 21%. Fachmi Kurnia, Chairman of the Indonesian Retail E-cigarette Association (Arvindo), stated that despite government efforts to decrease the proportion of smokers, the current results are not ideal.

He emphasized that the scientific facts about alternative tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and heated tobacco products have not been widely disseminated, leading the public to still perceive alternative tobacco as harmful to health and not suitable as an option to help adult smokers quit.

Kuniya calls on the government and health advocates to not only recognize the negative impacts of tobacco products, but also acknowledge the positive role that alternative tobacco products play in reducing smoking risks.
