Key Points:
·The e-cigarette sales ban in Malaysia's Perak and Terengganu states will come into effect simultaneously on August 1st, with strict enforcement measures in place.
·Offenders will face immediate closure or mandatory shutdown. The ban is based on a ruling from the Perak state's Islamic Religious Council in 2022 declaring e-cigarette use as "forbidden."
·These two states join Johor and Kelantan in a growing trend of smoking bans in several regions.
【2Firsts news flash】According to a report by The Straits Times on August 1st, Affendi Rajini Kanth, the chairman of the Glass City Municipal Council (MPK), stated that a inspection on July 31st found that the majority of shops had ceased operations and displayed closure notices.
“We have completed the public awareness campaign. We are now entering a phase of comprehensive enforcement. We will not accept any delays or procrastination. If any shops are still operating, we will immediately issue a closure notice. If compliance is refused, the relevant premises will be forcibly closed.”
He added that the enforcement action on August 1 was carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and the police.
The Minister of State for Glassware, Mohd Shukri Ramli, announced the e-cigarette sales ban on May 14th. This follows a ruling by the Islamic Religious Council of Glassware in 2022 declaring the use of e-cigarettes as "haram" (against religious law).
In April, Terengganu also announced a similar ban, which will also take effect on August 1st. With this, Pahang and Terengganu join Johor and Kelantan states in prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes.
