Key points:
The Maldives will implement a "generational smoking ban" starting in November 2025, prohibiting the sale of cigarettes to individuals born after January 2007.
This policy will be incorporated into the revision of the Tobacco Control Law, but specific penalties have not yet been announced.
The policy continues the smoke control measures of increasing the legal smoking age to 2024 and banning the import of e-cigarettes.
According to The Daily Guardian, on April 15, the office of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu announced that starting from November 1, 2025, the sale of cigarettes will be prohibited to individuals born after January 2007.
The new regulation mandates a lifetime ban on purchasing cigarettes for generations born after January 2007. This widespread trend is aimed at protecting the younger generation from the health hazards associated with tobacco. Currently, specific penalties for violating the new law have not been disclosed, but the government has confirmed that it will amend the existing tobacco control law to prepare for the implementation of the new policy.
The intergenerational smoking ban is built upon recent tobacco control measures in the Maldives. In November 2024, the legal smoking age in the Maldives was raised from 18 to 21, and the import of e-cigarettes and related devices was prohibited.
