Man Summoned for Smoking in Lavatory: Law Violation
A 48-year-old man in the Stavropol region was summoned by police after smoking in an airplane restroom bound for St. Petersburg.

According to a report by ATVmedia on January 5, 2024, a 48-year-old man from the Stavropol region was summoned by the police to the duty department after smoking in the restroom of a flight to St. Petersburg. He was fined for violating the law prohibiting smoking in designated areas.

Canada’s federal health minister, Majorie Michel, said she is looking into legislation that would permanently ban the sale of tobacco products to anyone born after 2008. She said Canada has seen the approach recently proposed in the United Kingdom and is reviewing it with partners. Health Canada previously said the Government of Canada has invested C$66 million annually since 2018 to help Canadians quit smoking and reduce the harms of nicotine addiction.

Yaroslav Nilov, chair of the State Duma Committee on Labour, Social Policy and Veterans’ Affairs, said a bill proposing a full ban on vape sales is currently before the State Duma, though no final decision has yet been made. He said the initiative has been signed by representatives of almost all factions and noted that support for a full ban has also been voiced at the regional governor level. A coalition of health and child rights advocates in the Philippines said it supports Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa’s call to raise the legal age restriction for vape and tobacco products from 18 to 25. The group said scientific evidence shows that the brain of a young person continues to develop until the mid-20s, and that nicotine exposure during that period can cause lasting impairment in impulse control, learning, and mood regulation.
