Milan to Implement Comprehensive Outdoor Smoking Ban from 2025
Milan will implement a nearly complete outdoor smoking ban starting January 1, 2025, in line with approved air quality regulations.

According to ANSA on December 26th, starting from January 1, 2025, Milan, Italy will almost completely ban smoking outdoors.


This marks a new phase in the air quality management regulations approved by the Milan City Council in 2020. The new regulations require smoking to be banned in all public outdoor areas or areas used by the public, unless individuals are able to maintain a distance of 10 meters from others.


According to Milan's air and climate plan, starting in 2021, the ban on certain activities will be expanded to specific areas such as public transport stops, parks, and green spaces. Starting on January 1, 2025, the city government stated that the ban will be further extended to all outdoor public or publicly used areas, including streets, with the exception of designated areas at least 10 meters away from others.


This smoking ban only applies to tobacco products, while the use of e-cigarettes is still allowed.

Philip Morris International (PMI) said its U.S.-related investments have topped $20 billion since 2022, when it entered the U.S. market through its roughly $19 billion acquisition of Swedish Match. The company also said it plans to launch its heated tobacco product IQOS ILUMA in the United States pending authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Maldives Customs data shows that fines related to illegal vapes have reached MVR 659 million (about US$42.8 million) since the country banned the import and use of electronic cigarettes. Authorities said most seized vapes were brought in by travellers arriving from Malaysia. The largest single case involved 10,800 vapes, resulting in a fine of MVR 108 million (about US$7.02 million).
