According to a report by the Lebanon Democrat, over a year ago, the Truesdale County school district in the state of Tennessee, United States, made the decision to install e-cigarette sensors in school restrooms. However, there has been a new development concerning students using e-cigarettes at school.
Despite the effectiveness of these sensors installed in bathrooms in reducing student smoking, a new trend has emerged wherein students are now attempting to use e-cigarettes in classrooms.
Clint Satterfield, the superintendent of Trussdale County School District, revealed that students have started wearing long-sleeved shirts in classes and hiding e-cigarettes inside their shirt sleeves to conceal their usage.
In response to the emerging issue, Casey Kuhn, the principal of Satterfield County High School, has decided to strengthen the penalties for first-time offenders of using e-cigarettes. This decision took effect from Monday. Satterfield reveals that Kuhn will discipline students who use nicotine-containing e-cigarettes by keeping them on campus. However, considering the significant rise in e-cigarette incidents within the school, he has decided to send first-time offenders directly to Saturday school, typically a day when students come to the school for tutoring or training.
Regarding e-cigarettes containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the school maintains a zero tolerance policy and students caught with them will face immediate expulsion.
Coon stated, "We need the help of the entire community. We truly need the support of parents and businesses to ensure the health and safety of children."
