The UK government is set to announce new outdoor smoking bans near playgrounds, schools and hospitals on November 5, according to The Sun. However, Health Secretary Wes Streeting will confirm that customers will still be able to smoke in pubs.
This decision is a victory for pub owners opposed to smoking bans. Today (5th), legislation submitted to Parliament will also prohibit e-cigarette advertising and sponsorship.
The new bill will further empower the government to restrict fruity-flavored vapes aimed at attracting children and impose fines on stores that sell tobacco products to minors on the premises.
The indoor smoking ban introduced in 2007 will be extended to outdoor areas, including schools, hospitals, and playgrounds, with specific measures subject to consultation. These areas may also adopt smoke-free policies.
"If we don’t take action to help people stay healthy, rising health issues will overwhelm the NHS," Streeting said.
"Prevention is better than cure. The government is taking bold steps to create the first smoke-free generation, combat youth exposure to nicotine through vaping, and protect children and vulnerable groups from secondhand smoke."
It is also reported that disposable vapes will be banned nationwide by next summer to curb youth addiction to vaping in the UK.
