New Regulation Prohibiting E-cig Sales to Underage Effect Before Christmas in Ireland
New law banning the sale of e-cigarettes to under 18s in Ireland set to take effect before Christmas, says Health Minister.

According to a report on FM104 news website, the Irish Minister of Health has confirmed that regulations prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to individuals under the age of 18 will come into effect before Christmas.

 

British American Tobacco (BAT) Ireland has called for stricter regulation of e-cigarettes with candy, dessert, and soft drink flavors. The company believes that this will make the e-cigarette industry more responsible.

 

In November last year, lawmakers voted in favor of banning the sale of e-cigarette products to minors. This legislation was subsequently approved by the Senate and signed into law by President Michael D. Higgin. Currently, this law is awaiting the orders to commence enforcement.

 

In an interview, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly stated that these regulations are "of great importance" and will be implemented "soon".

British American Tobacco (BAT) shares rose sharply on May 12 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration signaled it would deprioritize enforcement against certain unauthorized e-cigarette and nicotine pouch products with accepted premarket applications. The UK government announced on April 29 that the Tobacco and Vapes Bill had received Royal Assent and become law. Under the new law, it is illegal to sell tobacco to anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 2009. The government said the law creates the UK’s first “smoke-free generation” and includes measures to ban the advertising and sponsorship of vapes and nicotine products, as well as powers to restrict packaging, branding and displays designed to appeal to children.

Disposable Vape Ban Shifts Purchasing Formats as UK Vape Volume Falls 10.3%
Data from convenience insight agency Talysis shows that the value of tobacco, vapes and smoking alternatives in the independent convenience sector fell by 4.4% in the first quarter of 2026, while volume fell by 7.8%. The vaping subcategory declined by 3.9% in value and 10.3% in volume over the same period. Talysis said the impact of the disposable vape ban continues to pressure turnover and footfall.

According to the Nizhny Novgorod regional government, 550 stores in the region have voluntarily removed vapes and e-liquids from their product assortments. Regional officials said a public offer encouraging businesses to self-restrict vape sales has been in place since September 2025, and that a large retail chain with more than 40 outlets in Nizhny Novgorod joined the initiative. Japan’s transport ministry said on April 14 that major Japanese airlines reported 429 passenger smoking incidents on domestic and international flights in 2025, the highest level since comparable data collection began in 2004.
